A dazzling 45-minute set of jazz, soul and r&b akin to The White Brothers’ heyday

New York City

Freelance

With melodic conventions, an eclectic mix of rhythms, jazz fusion, boom-bap, and afro-beat, FREELANCE honors the musical legacy of Fela Kuti, bridging the gaps between music from the continent and from the diaspora.

Freelance is a NYC-based band with influences in electronic fusion, jazz, progressive R&B, and alternative rock. By design, the name Freelance defines their music style. The band, and the origins of its genre-bending sound, began at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where founding leaders, Tim "Smithsoneon" Smith (Vocals) and Ausar The Ambassador (Keyboards), along with Craig Hill (saxophone), Yasser Tejeda (guitar), Justin Tyson (drums), and David Ginyard (bass) developed their craft and established a close friendship. Propelled to create, the band performed around Boston before relocating to New York.

Freelance continues to evolve. Each band member possesses an extensive resume, reflecting work with a range of established artists such as Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway, Terence Blanchard, Solange, Esperanza Spalding, Bilal and many more. Together, the band exudes a familiar energy that uplifts and inspires audiences to live freely in pursuit of their passions; to "Live Freelance." Freelance is currently working on their sophomore studio album for release in 2022.
