We’re throwing a party for Easthampton’s incoming mayor and helping her launch a new Community Service Initiative. Join us on Saturday, January 6th for a Mardi Gras style get down featuring New Orleans trombone sensation, Glen David Andrews and his sizzling funk band. Chef Neftali Duran will be serving up bayou inspired street food starting 6PM and Mayor LaChapelle will take the stage at 7PM to kickoff the festivities.

Glen David Andrews Band

In a city whose spirit world is as old as Mother Africa’s children, Glen David Andrews, a native son of New Orleans, has made a compelling case for his own deliverance with a powerful music that correlates his own reclaimed life to his reclaimed city.

A warrior for cultural preservation at a time when indigenous traditions are being threatened, Andrews is standing up now for his own salvation. As the journalist Larry Blumenfeld, a Katrina Media Fellow with the Open Society Institute, has written: ”Long before he began trying to save himself in earnest, Andews’s music projected the promise of redemption…His remarkable singing voice and commanding trombone sound (both powerful, direct, resonant, and with just enough rasp) as well as his disarmingly honest manner have provided whatever the situation calls  for: beauty, truth, compassion, anger, joy or all of the above.”

You can learn more about Glen David Andrews at his website.

Mayor Nicole LaChapelle’s Community Service Initiative was developed to create civic engagement opportunities for the benefit of Easthampton’s nonprofit organizations and community programs. Through this effort, Mayor LaChapelle asks residents to reaffirm their commitment to Easthampton and give back to our city with volunteer hours, contributions, and good will.

The Mayor’s Community Service Initiative will kick off this Saturday, January 6, just days after the Oath of Office. Mayor LaChapelle will join volunteers at the Easthampton Community Center, and will participate in additional service days each season throughout her administration. Look for more information on ways to get involved in the weeks ahead.
